Magic Rises (Kate Daniels #6)

I am so far thoroughly enjoying this series. I love reading them over and over again. Well… not the first one, but all the others yes! This is the sixth novel in this series. I am super excited that the seventh novel will be coming out in a few more weeks. I feel like we should have a counter to count down when the new book comes out. I feel like that could make my life a bit easier. Anyways… as I come back from that tangent, here is a brief background provided by Goodreads: Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta.

Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap…

Kate reminds me a bit of Eve Dallas from the In Death series. They are both strong women willing to through a punch instead of a slap, but it is more than that. It’s their insecurities that remind me of each other. They are both fearful that their love will end in either blood, destruction, or death. Either way it’s a reason not to get too close. I can completely understand that feeling. Why risk your heart when more times than not it gets burned? Kate’s insecurities and fears are very realistic and so emotionally provoking. Kate’s need to save everyone from her dreaded father is what allows her to push aside her own fears to face what must be done. I enjoyed seeing this side of Kate.

Another thing I love about these novels is the mythology that is brought up. It really reminded me of why I love mythology so much. I am actually thinking about going back to school and getting my masters with emphasis in mythology. I found that introductions of the Assyrian myths very entertaining. I especially loved the different creatures Kate meets in this novel. Also note that in this novel Raphael and Andrea are back together. In the last novel you saw them barely speaking to each other. Well just so you know, and so you won’t get confused like me, you can read their story in Gunmetal Magic.

As for Curran’s and Kate’s relationship. It was very iffy there for a moment. I almost thought that they were going to walk away from each other. How could things change so quickly between them? I cannot tell you what happens, because, well spoilers! But I can say that the sex scenes were great and fully of heat, power, and love. Pay close attention to connection and the problems between what is right and what needs to be done. It’s interesting why they do the things they do. Super good book to read.

I give this novel 5 out 5 stars. I simply enjoyed every minute of it and could not put it down. I cannot wait for the next novel to come out. Every time I walk into Barnes and Nobles I automatically check to see if it there. Shame on me for getting my hopes up. Stay tuned for my next review.
